Festival Senggigi Just Got a New Name: Meet the Senggigi Sunset Show

The Senggigi Sunset Show is the new name for what used to be Festival Senggigi, and it had its opening evening on Saturday, September 19, at the amphitheater of the Senggigi Art Market. West Lombok’s tourism office says the change is about more than a new logo. The idea is a better-quality event that spreads the benefits around local businesses, instead of just filling a stage for a night.

What the Senggigi Sunset Show actually is

Officially, it’s a rebrand. Agus Gunawan, who heads the West Lombok tourism office, said the district renamed the event to lift its quality. RRI described the new format as replacing the earlier festival concept, which leaned mostly on entertainment, with something built around sustainability and local participation. The plan is to link tourists, hotels, small businesses and local producers, including people in agriculture and fisheries, so the money visitors spend reaches more of the community.

Vice Regent Nurul Adha put it in plain terms: tourism has to benefit the people who live here. She said she hopes the event shows that Senggigi is on its way back up and becoming a really comfortable place for guests. Tourists, both domestic and international, hotel representatives, small business owners and local officials all turned up for the opening.

Why the timing matters

The tourism office described the Sunset Show as part of its road to MotoGP, meaning a way to keep visitors busy, and staying longer, around the race. Other goals listed include reviving Senggigi’s tourism, lifting hotel occupancy and getting guests to spend more nights. That lines up with what hotels are reporting. On September 17, West Lombok’s tourism office said several Senggigi hotels were already fully booked ahead of race weekend, and that tourism activities are scheduled through December to keep visitors around. You can read more in the West Lombok government’s occupancy report.

Why bother with a rebrand at all? In plain terms, a festival that’s mostly entertainment draws a crowd for one night, while the new pitch is about people coming back, staying longer and spending money that stays local. Whether that works will depend on the follow-through: events that actually run regularly, and local vendors who are genuinely part of them. That’s my read, not an official statement, and it’s far too early to judge from a single opening evening.

What we don’t know yet

Here’s the part that’s still blurry. None of the reports available give a schedule for future Sunset Show evenings, say what they’ll cost, or explain how the new brand fits with the earlier festival. For context, Festival Senggigi 2026 launched as a three-month program of culture, arts and community events, with performances at the same amphitheater, and local authorities reported rising attendance, including international tourists staying in nearby hotels. We covered that launch in our Festival Senggigi 2026 article, which now notes the rebrand.

So if you’re planning around it, don’t assume there’s a show every night. Think of the opening as a sign of where Senggigi tourism is heading, and check with your hotel or the district tourism office for what’s actually on during your dates.

Making an evening of it

Whatever the final schedule turns out to be, the formula is hard to beat. Senggigi is the island’s classic sunset coast, so arrive a little before dusk, find a spot near the amphitheater and make dinner part of the plan. The opening was on a Saturday evening, and the earlier festival ran its performances at weekends, so weekend evenings are the safest bet to start with. Our Senggigi and Mangsit guide has plenty of ideas for where to eat and what else to do along the strip.

And if you’d rather sleep near the sunset than drive home after it, the beachfront resorts on the Mangsit end of the coast are only a short drive further up the road. A relaxed beachfront stay just up the coast from Senggigi means you can catch the evening show and be back with your feet up before it gets late.
