For three days in October, a laid-back surf coast becomes one of the loudest places in Southeast Asia. The 4.3km street-style circuit sits directly on the coast – turquoise water beyond the run-off, green hills behind the grandstands – and it regularly draws more than 100,000 visitors across race weekend.

Race week fills the surrounding villages with night markets, parades and a festival atmosphere that spills far beyond the ticket gates. Even if you are not a racing fan, it is quite something to be on the island for it.
