Bali surfers have a secret they don’t love sharing: some of the best waves in Indonesia break one island east. Lombok’s south coast serves everything from the gentlest learner rollers in Southeast Asia to one of the longest left-hand barrels on the planet — often with a fraction of the crowd paddling for it. Beginners: start here
Selong Belanak
The best beginner wave on Lombok, full stop: a pretty, sandy-bottomed bay where reefs at either end tame the swell into clean, forgiving rollers. It’s consistent virtually year-round, surf schools line the sand, and your odds of standing up on day one are genuinely good. Post-session nasi goreng at a beach warung is mandatory tradition. Inside Gerupuk
A short boat ride across Gerupuk Bay (part of the fun) delivers you to a forgiving right-hander with a smooth bottom, easy take-off and a long, mellow ride — the classic step-up once whitewash waves feel too easy. Like Selong, it works nearly all year when the wind behaves.
Intermediate and advanced: the good stuff
Outside Gerupuk
The bay’s outer reef is a different animal: faster, hollower waves barreling over a sharp bottom. Gerupuk’s five separate breaks mean there’s almost always something working at your level — which is why the bay is south Lombok’s surf engine room.
Desert Point (Bangko-Bangko)
Lombok’s legend, out on the remote south-west tip: a bone-crunching left over shallow reef that, on its day, produces barrels running up to 20 seconds — among the longest lefts anywhere on Earth. It only truly fires in the dry season, it punishes mistakes, and it’s strictly for experienced surfers. Watching from the channel counts as a life experience too.
When to surf Lombok
May to September is prime: offshore trade winds and solid southern swell make spots like Desert Point and Mawi perform at their peak — this is also peak dry season, so book beds early. The wet season (November–March) stays surfable but smaller and mellower — arguably the nicest window for learners, with the bonus of empty line-ups. Beginner spots like Selong Belanak and Inside Gerupuk work year-round.
Logistics
Base yourself in Kuta — every southern break is within about 40 minutes. Boards travel fine on the fast boats from Bali (tell the operator when booking). Gerupuk breaks need a cheap boat shuttle from the village. And travelling with a non-surfer? The classic peace treaty is a split trip: surf days south, then a wind-down stretch on the calm Senggigi–Mangsit coast, where beachfront pools at places like Holiday Resort Lombok make excellent reparations for all those dawn patrols.
